The Challenges to Winter Recess

There are several issues that principals have brought up when asked why children are kept inside for recess in the winter.  Several that have been listed:

1)  Some parents have complained when their children have come home with wet shoes/socks/tights and have voiced the opinion that cold weather causes colds and flu.

2)  There is 'black' ice on the playground that makes it especially dangerous to play on the playground.

3)  Some children do not have the proper winter gear.

4)  The BSD guideline is 32 degrees.

Each of these issues are important and need to be addressed.  How best to address each issue is an open matter and will need the cooperation of parents, teachers and school administrators if winter outdoor recess is going to become part of our children's educational experience.
